Tuesday Links
It’s a new week, and with the browser issues settled at last, let’s return to hopping around the Internet.
• The big news going around is that Amazon plans to accept books in the Epub format. Epub is used by many non-Kindle readers, so this is a sea change in Amazon’s thinking. Previously they have only allowed books on Kindles in the MOBI ebook format.
• Two writers talk about their success with self-publishing. Tara Shuler celebrates her first month, in which she’s about to reach 300 sales of her first self-published book. That’s a fantastic amount of sales for a first month! And Julie Ortolon discusses the power of pricing, and how she made her sales rocket by giving her book away free on Amazon. Since Amazon doesn’t let you set a price below .99 normally, she had to maneuver to reach her goal.
• Continuing our discussion of how to best use Facebook for your writing, Emlyn Chand at Novel Publicity describes how to build a Facebook author page, and how to get people to “Like” it. That’s always the tricky part.
• At the Kindleboards Writers Cafe, we had a long discussion of our favorite writing books. Strunk and White’s led most of the lists, which moved someone to post a link to this debunking of S&W’s grammar rules. It’s a great read.
• Katie Salidas explains her process in developing a cover for her latest work, including how to work with cover designers. In Part Two she discusses Do-It-Yourself covers.
• And finally, Jennifer Wylie describes how to make a book kit, an organized set of marketing materials for your self-published work. Getting organized doesn’t come naturally to a lot of us, but your marketing efforts will go much more smoothly if you make this effort at the start.
That’s enough for this week. I’ll post in a couple of days with updates on sales of my first self-published short story (Spoiler: not so much).
